The inward light : messianic immanence and radical nonviolence in Henry and Laruelle

Our task in this study is twofold: (1) to bring together a Christocentric Quaker theology and spirituality, the radical theo-phenomenology of Michel Henry, and François Laruelle's non-philosophy; and (2) to bring to expression the bond between immanence and pacifism. Quaker theology has only very rarely been brought into conversation with continental philosophy of religion in general and the "Theological turn" in French phenomenology in particular. However, we will attempt here to demonstrate that there is much to be gained from this conversation. Quaker theology and spirituality, we will suggest, like Henry's theo-phenomenology of Life and Laruelle's understanding of messianity, is concerned with immanence, and with a simple fidelity to this immanence. In providing a Quaker reading of Henry and Laruelle, we will work to discern and develop a theo-phenomenological and non-philosophical grammar through which to express this bond between immanence and pacifism. For it is immanence, whether as Arch-Christic (Henry) or messianic (Laruelle), that suggests a pattern of holiness, or a way of radical nonviolence, that is not given in the World, not revealed in the ek-stasis of the World, a

Becoming-HeLa: Towards an Ethico-Onto-Epistemology of Grief

When she died in 1951, Henrietta Lacks was a thirty-one-year-old Black descendent of slaves living with her husband and five children in Baltimore. The so-called “immortal” cells from her fatal cervical carcinoma were taken without her knowledge or consent. When we talk about Henrietta Lacks or when we do research with HeLa cells, we are working with(in) entanglements—the entanglement of race, gender, class, and sexuality in the sciences and the entanglement of epistemology, ontology, and ethics. In producing and analyzing applications and representations of the cell line and its unknowing donor, I suggest the concept of grief as an ethico-onto-epistemological tool with the potential to yield more accountable uses of HeLa cells and to do justice to Henrietta Lacks. Drawing from feminist new materialism, science and technology studies, continental philosophy, philosophy and anthropology of science, and posthuman ethics, I employ a diffractive methodology to envision transformative practices that take seriously the construction and histories of race and gender in knowledge-making processes. I diffract the non-philosophy of François Laruelle and the philosophy-physics of Karen Barad,

Notes From the Urban Intertidal: A Paraontological Leaning

Notes from the Urban Intertidal: A Paraontological Leaning is a creative-practice doctoral research project, that stages fictionalised encounters with aspects of urban landscapes in late-modernity—landscapes that evolve within market-ready modes of existence. Encounter itself is conditioned by a turning-away from normative trajectories of urban practices that assume ameliorative capacities with respect to consequences of developing urban territory and the human subject. This research thinks through substrata of ameliorative capacity, that endure as the captivation of urbanisation by market logistics. In seeking what is opaque or indifferent to everyday urban regimes of control, and with necessary amplification or radicalization, the project figures the concurrency (not distance) of an always already, and other-placedness, that shapes a practice this thesis names para-fictioning. Without binding itself to the logic of ‘sense-making’, the thesis develops relations of alongsideness, occasioning transpositions—into words-without-language—of unmitigated exposure to the real subsisting under capitalist exploitation. François Laruelle’s non-philosophy, or non-standard thought, is engaged

  • Auteur(s) : Hugues Choplin
  • Année : 2004
  • Discipline : Philosophy, Ethics, and Existentialism
  • OpenAlex

This thesis has two aims : a) to problematize the radicalisation of philosophy carried out by Emmanuel Levinas' humanism of the other man and Francois Laruelle's non-philosophy respectively ; b) to foreground some of the dimensions that structure the contemporary philosophical field -particularly the phenomenological one. This thesis suggests that the radicalization of philosophy proposed by Levinas and Laruelle in terms of transcendence and immanence respectively makes it necessary to invent a new figure of philosophizing, one which is as irreductible to the figure of responsiveness (Levinas, Blanchot and the phenomenology of the Other) as it is to the figure of production (Laruelle, Derrida and Deleuze-Guattari).

The syntax of difference: Gilles Deleuze, media theory, and the problem of representation

  • Auteur(s) : Thomas Sutherland

This thesis examines the work of philosopher Gilles Deleuze in relation to contemporary media theory, arguing that the compatibility between metaphysics and media studies should not be taken for granted. Following the ‘non-philosophical’ approach of François Laruelle, it is argued that Deleuze’s project is defined by a disjunctive synthesis between his metaphysics and metaphilosophy, and that when his ontological concepts are introduced into media theory, they tend to ossify, gaining an unintended and problematic descriptive or explanatory power.

La généalogie du sujet : scepticisme et non-philosophie

  • Auteur(s) : Jean‐Baptiste Dussert
  • Année : 2007
  • Discipline : Psychoanalysis and Psychopathology Research
  • OpenAlex

The word genealogy denotes two lines of thought in the history of philosophy, the one beginning with Aristotle or Porphyry and the other with Schopenhauer or Nietzsche. The first line of thought takes its name from the fact that it explains the various meanings of Being by using a genealogical tree which it places those meanings. But the ontology becomes an egology beginning with Descartes, the grafting of the Subject revolutionizing the metaphysical connection with science. However, the unity of that tradition continues today, particularly with the phenomenology of Husserl. The second line of thought is so named because it breaks with the historical or dialectical explanation of the origin of a fact and substitutes in its place a hidden cause, which is both concealed and revealed by language. This has led to the invention of psychoanalysis. The non-philosophy of Francois Laruelle takes its inspiration from Bachelard’s epistemology, which falls perfectly within the framework of this counter-tradition. In this thesis, we question the validity and viability of non-philosophy. What exactly is it? What is the nature of its negativity? Can it lay claim to being the ”science of philosoph

As the new millennium dawns, there is a growing debate about the conflict between philosophies and between science and philosophy, and even about the end of philosophy itself. For this reason, we must seek out a radical and universal science that does not claim hierarchical importance or primacy over the others. Yet in the contemporary philosophies of Difference, the overriding importance of Difference as the philosophical invariant finds its place in the theory of immanence and, in juxtaposition, metaphysical transcendence. The vicious circle of the transcendent duality persists here in the name of the eternal recurrence, repetition, the chiasmus of the logos, and Emptiness. It would appear that the meanderings of contemporary thinking about these matters is leading us towards aporetic absurdity. In this regard, F. Laruelle demonstrates one thought of the Middle, which alleviates the depression and chaos of contemporary thinking. (Non-) philosophy, such as the immanental Middle, manages to make Generic science more universal as an avant-premiere. Generic science carved out from non-philosophy is sober, but free from the power of immanence of One or immanence of the Vision-in-One.

This PhD thesis seeks to answer the question of how the ancient philosophical problem of the ccontinuous and the discrete can be approached in a unified manner by assuming the validity of the 'generic matrix' developed (since 2008) by F. Laruelle as a new 'onto-vectorical' paradigm of thought. The problem is treated from four different angles: first, Laruelle's solution is presented through his 'quantizing' gesturality of thought. Second, this paradigm is subjected (contrary to A. Badiou's 'set-theoretic' approach [1988, 2006, 2018]) to a 'categorial' reinterpretation and 'tropical dequantization' (subsequent to a model of V. P. Maslov, V. N. Kolokoltsov et G. L. Litvinov). This gives rise to a 'semi-philosophical' solution for the initial problem called 'tropical philosophy'. Third, an analytic prolongation of Laruelle's 'quantum-oriented theory' leads to a 'non-commutative ontology' drawing further conclusions with regard to coherence considerations and the emergence of time in a non-commutative 'space of lived experience'. The fourth and final proposition consists in a 'topos-oriented' approach (after the models of A. Connes [2017] and O. Caramello [2018]). The concept of topos

Abstract realism : Non-anthropocentric strategies for constructing non-relational artworks.

This thesis investigates the neighbourhoods of artistic abstraction and philosophical realism towards developing a new material philosophy and practice led research methodology based upon a series of 'non-anthropocentric strategies' (following Fredric Jameson) for constructing, staging and encountering artworks as 'non-relational' (following Francois Laruelle) 'totalities' (following Carl Einstein) within the cultural-economic-socio-political reality of'capitalist realism' (following Mark Fisher). The thesis is presented over two 'sectors'. Each sector demonstrates the practical application of the material philosophy of abstract realism; investigating the nonrelational, construction and spatial claims of the research. The first sector is the written text titled An Asymmetrical and Angular Architectonic Arrangement. This sector gathers together eleven distinct 'zones' of research activity that have been carried out across the period of this project. The second sector is a new original artwork constructed using the 'toolkit' of abstract realism, titled 'Blackplastic.' This project concludes by proposing a number of contributions; first, a re-orientation of Jencksian adhocism away from

This thesis will introduce the work of Francois Laruelle and that of Anne-Francoise Schmid, it will then examine the relevance of each to art-making and how their 'thought as practice' resonates with ,y own processes of creative production. I will seek to demonstrate a kind of intersecting yet enclosed circularity between philosophy and contemporary art and to propose hypotheses, models and methods that, rather than simply propose an exit, engage in strategies that seek a non-entry into the contemporary art-philosophy orbit, and move of their own volitions on their own courses through time and space. In turn, reflecting on its educational context as Ph.D research within the field of fine art this project concludes itself by looking towards the ways in which this theory of non-entity might be integrated into approaches to fine art education, through the development of workshops both within and without standard institutional frameworks.

  • Auteur(s) : Chien‐Chang Lee
  • Année : 2010
  • Discipline : Philosophy, Sociology, Political Theory
  • OpenAlex
